BIKE BEATZ
BIKE BEATZ - A rhythm-based serious game
About the game
BIKE BEATZ is a 2D front-view, rhythm-based serious game that is played using only a single key as input, the space bar. During the game, players must repair various types of bicycles in a repair shop setting by pressing the correct key in time with the indicated rhythm.
To encourage players to play BIKE BEATZ repeatedly, the game uses a high-score system, scoring the input accuracy with the levels “perfect hit,” “hit,” and “miss,” each of which is rewarded with a different number of points. If you get a “perfect hit” more than once in a row, you build a streak that earns you even more points. A miss during a streak ends the streak. At the end of each level, players’ performance is rated with stars and a total score.
My role in development
In this project I had the role of lead programmer. This means I was responsible for creating and implementing a majority of the code of the game as well as combining all assets created by the rest of the team in the engine.
Additionally, I managed a team of one programmer from the team and three external programmers. I implemented coding standards and conventions to unify coding styles, increase legibility of the code as well as decreasing difficulty of bug finding and maintenance overall.
In collaboration with one other programmer we used FMOD and its marker system to let new songs and their timing be implemented seamlessly. While the song is played, the code reads out marker names and triggers input detection as well as sprite changes.
